Happy Mothers Day
To Mum, Mutter, Umee, Maii, Mère, or Mom – Happy Mother’s Day!
Some Mother’s Day history from around the world…
In the UK and Ireland, Mother’s Day is celebrated on Mothering Sunday – which took place this year on 14 March, the 4th Sunday of Lent. It originated from the idea of taking an annual visit to one’s Mother Church, but eventually became a day when young apprentices and servants were released from their duties to go home and be with their mothers.
Children in France spend days drawing a card and practising a poem as a surprise for their mothers for Fête des Mères, which takes place on 7 June.
In the US, Anna Jarvis held a memorial to her mother two years after her death and thereafter embarked upon a campaign to make "Mother's Day" a recognized holiday – going so far as to copyright the term ‘Mother’s Day’ and ‘second Sunday in May’! But perhaps her efforts worked too well – she became bitter about the commercialisation of the holiday and spent her inheritance campaigning against it. In fact, she had this to say about one of the more traditional Mother’s Day gift ideas: “A printed card means nothing except that you are too lazy to write to the woman who has done more for you than anyone in the world. And candy! You take a box to Mother—and then eat most of it yourself. A pretty sentiment.”
Harsh words indeed! We don’t have a problem with printed cards, especially if you add your own personal note of thanks to your Mum for everything she does!
Heritage & CityLife Hotels have a number of additional ways to show her you care – you can give her a night away to relax and refresh with a Mother’s Day Gift Voucher, or if you live in the Auckland area, take the opportunity to get dressed up for a High Tea in the historic Grand Tearoom.
No matter what, your time is free, so remember to call, Skype, or text away and don’t forget to tell your Mum you are thinking about her. From everyone at Heritage & CityLife Hotels, we wish Mums everywhere a Happy Mother’s Day!
