- About Heritage
“I’m bored” are two words every parent dreads hearing. With the Heritage as your family accommodation, Queenstown has all the ingredients to keep boredom at bay with activities for kids’ right at your doorstep.
Children are growing and learning and sometimes it’s hard to find the time to get them away from the TV or computer. The range of Queenstown activities will ensure you and your children have fun as a family, but also enjoy unique and new experiences. In winter there are four renowned and family friendly ski fields in the district; however there is also a huge range of fulfilling and entertaining activities for families all year round when you choose a Queenstown holiday. Start with a thrilling experience of the great outdoors: a trip on the Shotover Jet through the steep canyons combined with a 4WD tour taking in amazing scenery including the Lord of the Rings sites, and including panning for gold.
The Gold Rush was key to the development of the district, and history still comes alive here for visitors. Children of all ages enjoy the opportunity to try on olden day clothing at the Lakes District Museum and be photographed to capture that memory for years to come. The Goldfields Park illustrates the rugged lives of those early settlers. The steam ship Earnslaw turned 100 in October 2012 and yet still travels across the lake each day, to Walter Peak where you can see the day to day workings of a genuine operational high country sheep station.
Nature is all around in Queenstown, and the underwater observatory never fails to give a close up experience with the fish of the Wakatipu. A short walk up the hill from town, the Kiwi Birdlife Park allows you to see NZ’s unique legacy: rare birds which are not found anywhere else in the world.
Kids love adventure, so try the Ziptrek Ecotours, FunYaks, Skyline Luge, or for a rainy day “Rockatipu” –the indoor climbing wall where instructors will help your kids build strength and coordination while challenging themselves and most of all having fun. Crafty kids will love a session at the Bead Shop, while for a family expedition Outdoor Sports have bike rentals, or High Country Horses have guided horse treks, ensuring a truly fulfilling day out whatever your tastes.
By day feed the hungry hordes at Tham Nak Thai or Kappa, or for the best hot chocolates ever go to Patagonia. Later experience the Cow Pizza, the Lone Star or Bella Cucine Restaurants, or relax and stay in by the fire at Mackenzie’s Restaurant. For something unique you can sip mocktails at the Icebar –where everything is made of ice and the warm gear is provided.
There are always plenty of great seasonal things to do, especially during school holidays. Just ask at front-desk to find out what’s on, and remember -if you would like someone else to watch the kids so you can experience a Queenstown attraction by yourselves: they can help with that too.
