Environmental commitment
Heritage Rotorua offers 203 well-appointed rooms overlooking the renowned Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve and Historical Living Village. Our unique location allows us to source water from the geothermal valley to assist in heating our domestic hot water, thus helping reduce our reliance on other types of energy generation.
We recognise that our business has an important role to play in protecting and enhancing the environment for future generations, and to help secure the long-term sustainability of the Tourism Industry of New Zealand. Heritage Rotorua is committed to creating an environmentally safe working place.
As a minimum the hotel will fully comply with all relevant environmental legislation.
Heritage Rotorua takes environmental issues very seriously. There is a unique and important relationship between the local geothermal activity and some of the energy sources used by this hotel. Recycling forms an integral part of the hotel operations and is reinforced continually to housekeeping, maintenance and all other staff.
The Hotel does not, on a regular basis, use any boilers or rely on diesel, coal, petrol, gas or electricity to run our hotel hot water heating system. Instead natural thermal resources are used; these in no way harm our environment, and provide a pollution free sustainable energy.
Heritage Rotorua draws geothermal fluid from a natural hot spring, located adjacent to the stream behind the hotel; the temperature of this fluid from the source is approx 96 degrees Celsius (205 degrees Fahrenheit).
The geothermal fluid is circulated around a ring-main system and through a series of heat exchangers, which in turn heats the town supplied cold water for use in all guest rooms, the hotel laundries, kitchens, outdoor pool and spas.
Once used, the cooled geothermal fluid is returned into the Puarenga Stream, behind the hotel. This is a truly remarkable and unique way of using a renewable energy source without any impact on our environment.
As part of our ongoing commitment to the environment the hotel has a strong Sustainability policy that outlines what we currently do and what our focus for the future is. A copy of our policy is provided in the guestroom compendium for all guests to share in, as well as forming part of our induction programme for new members of our team.
We address sustainability issues at our regular health & safety meetings, as well as quarterly at our head of department meetings. We invite guests and staff alike to share their thoughts and suggestions, to ensure that our current focus and any new initiatives are live and challengeable.
