Six families met up from all over NZ for a long Easter weekend. Between us we had over 20 children ranging in age from 19 to 5. We were given villas clustered together near the duck pond. This allowed the adults to gather in one villa while the children gathered in another and multiple combinations.
The villas are well equipped with slightly different layouts. 2 downstairs double bedrooms, and a mezzanine king. Ours had separate bathroom and separate toilet but some had the toilet in the bathroom. Large living room/dining room connects to a kitchen spacious enough for several people to work in at once. Each villa has an internal garage which we all used to store mountain bikes. There is a deck with outdoor furniture. Although we didn't need them there were both heat pump heaters and wood fired pot belly stoves in the living room.
To keep costs down our group self catered all meals except one at a restaurant about 50 metres away.
I am a light sleeper so was delighted with how quiet the hotel was. One duck quaked loudly on Sunday morning to wake the children to the Easter egg hunt. The surrounding hotel grounds provide tennis courts, pétanque area and plenty of grass for hide and seek and other games. There is also an outdoor pool but we used the Hanmer Springs mineral pools instead.
It's a great location for town, shops, walks to the top of Conical Hill and a variety of mountain bike trails.
The staff were all very friendly and efficient. Two of the cleaning crew were so kind to me on departure when I discovered a flat battery. Nothing was too much trouble and they jump started me from their own car so I did not miss my flight connection. Thank you!
