Nelson for families

“I'm bored” are two words every parent dreads hearing. A family holiday staying at Rutherford Hotel Nelson, however, is guaranteed to keep boredom at bay, with plenty of attractions in Nelson and around.

There are activities in Nelson for all seasons; wet, or fine. Tahunanui Beach provides the quintessential kiwi summer experience: build sandcastles and enjoy splashing in the bay. The Nelson Fun Park is also adjacent: hydroslide, play mini golf, or go for a spin in the “bumpa boats”. Natureland Zoo provides a wildlife experience focused on conservation, or for the bigger kids kite surfing lessons can provide thrills and new skills.

A trip out to Happy Valley Adventures provides a whole variety of possibilities: there’s the sky wire, 4WD quad bikes, paint ball, or horse trekking. For the family with school age kids a visit to Wild Tracks Crazy Kiwi Buggy Adventure provides thrilling off road tours. Further afield there's always Abel Tasman National Park for swimming, kayaking, seal watching, sailing, hiking and tramping.

Rainy days can cause grief on holidays, but not in Nelson: Action Indoor Sports have ten pin bowling, mini golf, a children’s indoor playground, and café and rock wall. The Argo is a top rainy day activity –this slippery fun driving adventure is available only in wet weather conditions. In winter you can experience Rainbow: the local ski area.

History and culture is fun when it’s interactive; in Nelson you can find this at both the Provincial Museum, and at Founders Park where the historical reconstruction include a decommissioned DC10, and (for the parents maybe?) a working craft brewery. Kids who are a little older can create their own souvenir with the Bone Carver, and watching glass being created and shaped at Flame Daisy is a fascinating experience for all ages.

After a big day out there are plenty of handy eateries. Fill them up with kebabs, dine and spend quality time together at Oceano, or thrill them with an entertainment filled teppanyaki meal at Miyazu.

Just feel like staying in? There's always the pool, and wi-fi available and luckily the hotel offers a range of family-friendly rooms and interconnecting rooms so there’s the space to enjoy those down days. And remember, if as parents you need a little time just for yourselves there are babysitting services available. Just ask at the desk for help accessing any of these activites or services.
